Lost Surfboards was founded in 1985 by legendary shaper Matt Biolos and a group of school friends under the name “Team Lost.” Based in Southern California, they split their time between snowboarding at Mt. Baldy, skateboarding in Upland, and surfing in Dana Point. What began as a crew name scribbled on books and boards soon evolved into one of the most influential surf brands in the world.
Matt “Mayhem” Biolos – The Driving Force
In 1987, shortly after high school, Matt Biolos began sanding surfboards and shaping his own designs under the nickname “Mayhem,” inspired by one of his early board models. In his first year, he shaped just 20 boards. To make ends meet, he continued sanding and started painting custom graphics, signing them with the now-iconic LOST logo. Surfers such as Christian Fletcher and Matt Archbold rode boards with Biolos’ paint jobs, helping build his reputation. By working alongside respected California shapers like Timmy Patterson, Jim Fuller, Terry Senate, and Randy Sleigh and constantly refining designs with feedback from top surfers Biolos developed the progressive shaping style that would define Lost Surfboards.
